Defect rate, DPMO and sigma level
Your production quality: scrap rate, defects per million and Six Sigma level.
How it works
DPMO = defects / (units × opportunities) × 1,000,000. Sigma level = inverse normal of the yield + 1.5 (conventional shift). Six Sigma = 3.4 DPMO.

Worked example
With the default values:
- Units produced12000
- Defects found85
- Defect opportunities per unit3
- Cost per defect (rework, scrap, returns)18
you get:
- Sigma level4.33 σ
- DPMO (defects per million)2,361
- First-pass yield99.764 %
- Defects per unit0.0071
Frequently asked questions
How does the “Defect rate, DPMO and sigma level” tool work?
DPMO = defects / (units × opportunities) × 1,000,000. Sigma level = inverse normal of the yield + 1.5 (conventional shift). Six Sigma = 3.4 DPMO.
What do I need to enter?
Just fill in: units produced, defects found, defect opportunities per unit, cost per defect. The result updates as you type.
Can you give an example?
Units produced: 12000; Defects found: 85; Defect opportunities per unit: 3; Cost per defect (rework, scrap, returns): 18 → Sigma level: 4.33 σ; DPMO (defects per million): 2,361.
